Following the independence of Pakistan in 1950, the Central Statistical Office (CSO) was established by the Government of Pakistan as an attached department of the Economic Affairs Division. Since then, the statistical system has been reviewed regularly by both local and foreign consultants. In 1972, at the recommendation of the IBRD Mission, the CSO was upgraded to a full-fledged Statistics Division. In 1981, the technical wing of the Division (the original CSO) was converted into the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) as one of its attached departments. To further progress the statistical system of the country, the Government of Pakistan has now established the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, combining the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the Population Census Organization, the Agriculture Census Organization, and the Technical wing of the Statistics Division.
